Reception Mrs Byrne 2022 - 2023

Mrs Byrne

Reception teacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

This half term our topic is Dinosaurs. We will begin our topic with an intriguing dinosaur hunt. We will follow clues and explore our environment until we find the creature that laid the eggs; suspiciously nested in our classroom! We will then continue our learning through the use of non-fiction texts about lots of different dinosaurs. These include the T-Rex, Triceratops and Pterodactyl, amongst others. We will look at their features and compare them to each other. Moving on from that we will look at a series of fiction books including Dylan’s Amazing Dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus Drip and A Dinosaur Called Tiny and Dinosaurs’ Day Out.

We will be creating our own dinosaur using clay, then glazing and firing it in the kiln. Of course we will need to name them too!

The children are doing very well with their phonics homework and we appreciate your continued support with this, alongside their reading. We are well underway now securing our phase 3 sounds and it is great to see their confidence grow as they are beginning to apply their knowledge of sounds in both reading and writing, which is fantastic.

Free choice books seem to be going down a treat! Many children have excitingly told me about the book they have chosen and it is a pleasure to hear their love of reading develop. Running alongside this I am pleased to now be able to invite parents contact me to pop in for our ‘Star Reader’ opportunities. The children feel so excited and proud when it is their relative coming in. If you haven’t yet booked in, do see if you can! Younger siblings are more than welcome to tag along and join in with our story time.

In maths the children are continuing to enjoy the challenges White Rose provides them with. We will continue to find number bonds, consider what one more is and one less as well as halving numbers and doubling numbers. Our theme this half term is titled ‘Building 9 and 10’ (Please look at the White Rose link to see more). We will be using language relating to addition and subtraction as well as jumping along our number lines. In our environment we will be looking at shapes, similarities and differences around us, and times of the day.

As always, it is a pleasure to teach your children and see their joy as they achieve new things. We pride ourselves in working closely with parents, please feel free to email me or have a brief chat to me at the door after school.

Things to remember.....

Library Books will be changed every Monday.

Free Choice reading books will be outside class every day at drop off and pick up, for you to swap as often as you and your child please.

Reading books are changed each week, on the same day. Please record in the homework diary each time your child reads. If books haven’t been read, we will not change them.

Celebration Assembly- every Friday. Bring in any awards your child has achieved outside of school, it is lovely to acknowledge such wonderful achievements.

Parent Helpers- parents and grandparents are always HUGELY appreciated here in Reception. If you’d like to come in and help on an ad-hoc basis or routinely for as little or long as you want please see me.

Remember to name every piece of clothing your child wears to school, items will always find their way back to you if they are named!

Thank you for your continued support and here’s to another super half term!
