Summer Term

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope that you all had a wonderful easter break and managed to get out and about whilst things started to repoen! 

During the rest of this half term, in English we will be reading lots of lovely Traditional Tales to continue helping us with our sentence work. We are going to start off the term with a very well known story 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. We will use our Talk 4 Writing strategies to help us with retelling the story, before we have a go at inovating the story, in order to make the story have a slight twist! 


In Maths we will be having our first look at the unit of work Multiplication and Division. Within this unit, practical equipment is encouraged throughout, to help cement these essential mathematical concepts with children. We will start off by doing lots of practical lessons, where we will use counters to create the columns and rows within arrays to help us with finding groups. Once we have a secure understanding of arrays and how they work, this will enable to us to move on to the sharing and grouping part of division. 


The time has arrived for children to be set a small piece of consolidation homework each week.  The homework set will either be Maths, English, or Phonics and will relate to something that has been taught in class that week. It is therefore important that children try and do the homework as independently as possible so that they are revising what they already know. If children are struggling with the homework, please contact me about this or pop a note in their book and I will do my best to go over it with them in school time.  

Thank you for all your hard work with spelling and reading so far this year. Please continue to read every day with your children, it is very beneficial for the children to read with an adult and be asked different questions about their reading book. Our little word boxes are also working so well and the children seem to be loving using them, so please continue to read over these words to ensure your child’s high frequency word recognition is improving each week.

Things to remember 

Reading: Children will be given a set day to change their reading book, this will either be a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and this will be the same day all year wherever possible. It is really important that children are reading regularly at home (daily if possible), for approximately 10- 15 minutes. It would also be very beneficial to your child if when reading, you could ask them some questions about their book, to see if they have understood what they have just read. Please could I also ask you to sign your child’s home –school diary when you listen to your children read and when they have completed their book? It would be really helpful if you can make sure your child's reading folder is in school every day. All children will complete guided reading in a small group with a teacher each week and where possible will read with a parent helper. 

Spelling: Spellings will be given out on a Monday and the children will then complete a spelling quiz the following Monday in which they will be tested on their High Frequency Words (HFW). These are the most commonly used words when writing therefore it is key that the children can spell these correctly from an early age. Spellings will be sent home on a ‘Summer Term One spelling grid’ and can be practised using the ‘Look, cover, write, check’ method. Please encourage correct letter formation and high quality work from your child when you are practising with them.

Homework: During the first term in Year 1, my main focus is for the children to practise their reading and spellings to ensure they are becoming more confident. I will look to send out a small amount of more formal homework in the Spring term.

P.E:  Children should come to school in their P.E kit or a plain tracksuit on a Monday &  Tuesday from WC 19.04.21. This could be their normal PE Kit consisting of black or green shorts or tracksuit bottoms, either the Whirley PE T-shirt or any white t-shirt with a pair of trainers and a jacket.   

Water bottles:  The children are encouraged to bring a water bottle each day. Please only fill the bottle with water. Children will be asked to put drinks other than water back in their school bag to drink with their lunch as they have access to the water fountain during the day.
