Year 1 Mrs Shaul 2020 - 2021

Miss Edwards

Welcome to Year 1!

Autumn Term 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

During this half term we will continue following Sunny the meerkat on his journey to his next holiday destination. He is currently enjoying himself so much with us in Year 1, that he doesn’t seem to want to pack up his suitcase and leave! (We are actually very glad about his! )

We will start off our half term by writing post cards about what we have been up to over the half term. We are then going to have a walk to the local post box and post our very own postcards. We must make sure that our handwriting is nice and neat though, or the postman won’t be able to read where it needs to be sent to! We are then going to get to know Sunny even more by writing Non-Chronological reports all about Meerkats.

As we move into December we will begin to think about the most wonderful time of the year – Christmas! We will make our own Christmas card and craft that will be brought home with us. We will also be doing something slightly different this year, as we are unable to do our Christmas production – watch this space!

Thank you for all your hard work with spelling and reading so far this year. Please continue to read every day with your children, it is very beneficial for the children to read with an adult and be asked different questions about their reading book. Our little word boxes are also working so well and the children seem to be loving using them, so please continue to read over these words to ensure your child’s high frequency word recognition is improving each week.

Thank you for your continued support.

Home Learning

If you have to isolate, you will find the weeks planning document at the bottom of this page. It will be called 'Home Learning Week...'

Within this document there will be Maths, English and Foundation tasks to work through. If a worksheet is being used in school, this will be emailed to you to use at home.

Things to remember

Reading: Children will be given a set day to change their reading book, this will either be a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and this will be the same day all year wherever possible. It is really important that children are reading regularly at home (daily if possible), for approximately 10- 15 minutes. It would also be very beneficial to your child if when reading, you could ask them some questions about their book, to see if they have understood what they have just read. Please could I also ask you to sign your child’s home –school diary when you listen to your children read and when they have completed their book? It would be really helpful if you can make sure your child's reading folder is in school every day. All children will complete guided reading in a small group with a teacher each week and where possible will read with a parent helper.

Spelling: Spellings will be given out on a Monday and the children will then complete a spelling quiz the following Monday in which they will be tested on their High Frequency Words (HFW). These are the most commonly used words when writing therefore it is key that the children can spell these correctly from an early age. Spellings will be sent home on an ‘Autumn Term One spelling grid’ and can be practised using the ‘Look, cover, write, check’ method. Please encourage correct letter formation and high quality work from your child when you are practising with them.

Homework: During the first term in Year 1, my main focus is for the children to practise their reading and spellings to ensure they are becoming more confident. I will look to send out a small amount of more formal homework in the Spring term.

P.E:  Children should come to school in their P.E kit or a plain tracksuit on a Monday &  Thursday from WC 7.09.20. This could be their normal PE Kit consisting of green shorts or tracksuit bottoms, either the Whirley PE T-shirt or any white t-shirt with a pair of trainers and a jacket.

Water bottles:  The children are encouraged to bring a water bottle each day. Please only fill the bottle with water. Children will be asked to put drinks other than water back in their school bag to drink with their lunch as they have access to the water fountain during the day.

If you ever have any questions, worries or concerns please don't hesitate to come and speak with me or email me and I will be more than happy to help!
