Year 3 2019 - 2020

Mrs Dunford

Welcome to Year 3

Hello and welcome to Year 3!

My name is Mrs Dunford and I will be your children's teacher this year.

By the sounds of it you have all had a great summer holiday, and the children seem ready for the new school year ahead. I'm really excited to be joining the Whirley team and teaching this class.

Please keep an eye on the class page website if you would like to know what we are learning about or need reminding of any dates for the diary.

On Monday the 9th of September we will be having a parent's meeting at 6 pm; most of the important information will be discussed then.  If you cannot attend, please try to pop in and see me so I can pass on any relevant information and documents.

Any question or queries, please do not hesitate to catch me at the end of the day.

Homework will be handed out on a Friday and should be handed back by the following Thursday.

Homework Details

Maths - Children must complete one page of the Schofield & Simms books each week. In year 3 children are also expected to complete a times table test on a Friday. Children will be allocated a set each week to revise.

It is recommended that children play on TT Rockstars weekly to encourage rapid recall of all timetables in preparation for the Year 4 timetables next year.

English - Children will receive one piece of English homework each week. This may vary each week depending on what the focus is. It will usually be a short comprehension piece or a SPaG worksheet.

Spelling - Spelling patterns and key words will be sent home on a Friday in preparation for an informal test the following week. The words will also be updated to this class page- see the 'Spellings' link. We will be using 'Spelling Shed' as an interactive tool for children to practice their spellings in class, children will also need to go on this at home as part of their spelling homework.

Reading - For their reading homework, the children are expected to read for 15 – 20 minutes each day. We ask that parents monitor their child’s reading and acknowledge this by signing their orange reading records every week. The class teachers will be checking children’s reading records every Thursday and will send them home with a book at the appropriate reading level for the child. These levels will be reassessed every half term and the class teacher may change your child’s reading book colour when appropriate. Reading a breadth of books/ leaflets/ comics for pleasure is also encouraged! Whenever possible please question them on the book they are reading, this would be beneficial to ensure they are fully comprehending what they are reading.

Your support with all homework and reading is very much appreciated so thank you in advance!

Our topic this term is 'The Stone Age'.

Year 3 will be learning about how humans used to live during the Stone Age, the importance of the Stone Age and how this shaped the world. We will do this by putting the Stone Age in time with other historical periods and identifying what we know about the Stone Age using research and evidence. We will be following a creative curriculum and this topic will also be incorporated in our English lessons. Please do support your child with further research at home and do bring in anything to share with the class.

Dates for your diary:

Parent Meeting -- Monday 9th September @ 6pm

The children should keep their P.E kit in school all week and have pumps for use indoors and trainers for outside. A tracksuit may also be worn outside when it is cold.

I'm really looking forward to getting to know you all, if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,

Mrs Dunford
