Year 5
Welcome to Year 5!
Spring 2024 – please have a look at the curriculum map which outlines our learning for this term.
English
In Year 5, we use a book- based approach when teaching English, which enables the children to deepen their love of reading and provides them with opportunities to experience lots of exciting texts. With this approach, we have an ‘Anchor Text’ as a basis for the children’s writing each term. The children will explore this text in detail, alongside other high-quality texts with similar themes. Our Anchor text for the Spring term will is ‘A Story Like the Wind’ by Gill Lewis. Children are welcome to bring this into school to follow as I read.
Author of the Term
We also like to celebrate fantastic authors at Whirley to continue fostering a love of reading. Our Author of the term will continue to be Philip Pullman, who is known for writing ‘Northern Lights’ and ‘Shadow in the North’.
Maths
We teach Maths every morning at Whirley. We follow the ‘White Rose’ Scheme of Learning, which helps children develop mastery in Mathematics. We encourage children to become resilient, independent learners, who can solve and justify problems, think creatively and communicate their answers. It is also important that the children continue practicing their times tables as so many areas of the Year 5 curriculum rely on a strong understanding of these. Because of this, we ask that the children go on TT Rockstars once a day during the week.
Foundation Subjects
Your music lesson is on a Thursday Afternoon
PE lessons will be a Monday Afternoon and swimming will be on Wednesday afternoon. As well as their white top and green shorts, they can wear a plain, dark tracksuit for when the weather is cooler. It is pumps or bare feet for indoor PE and trainers for Outdoor PE.
