Curriculum

At Whirley Primary school we will provide a rich and engaging curriculum that inspires children, developing a sound knowledge and understanding of all subjects. All staff are incredibly dedicated to ensuring experiences are varied and develop skills, confidence and analytical thinking through a wide range of learning approaches. We link learning to the local and wider communities of Macclesfield and Cheshire, making use of our wonderful school grounds and local environments.

Through a progressive approach, we ensure that a rich diet of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities are available to every student, helping and guiding our children to be 'the best that they can be'.

We are very lucky to have extensive grounds, offering opportunities for outside learning. We also regularly participate in local visits and work alongside the local community and other schools in the Fallibroome Trust.

We work tirelessly with our children to develop well-rounded members of the community through the use of The Whirley Charter. Our use of Restorative practices ensures that all children feel that they have a voice and are valued, whilst reflecting and becoming more self-aware as they grow.

The skilled team of staff offer a wide range of extra curricular opportunities allowing all children to flourish in sports and the creative arts. These clubs further enhance the work done in class and promote the values within the Whirley Charter.

We place a high value on representing Whirley in many various forms; from the sports field to the stage and believe that it is vital in helping the children to feel proud of the school and their environment.

We have worked hard to create knowledge maps for all areas of the curriculum taught at Whirley. The knowledge maps have been devised to ensure that progression across subjects is clear and that children are given every opportunity to develop skills whilst retaining knowledge in all curriculum areas.

Each knowledge map charts the learning done in each group. The maps specify vocabulary to be learned and composite tasks which will be carried out by the children over the course of the year. The expectations will then be monitored and assessed through the composite tasks and pupil quizzes, mind maps and presentations.

Where possible EYFS (Reception) has been included in these maps, however please note that EYFS are still working towards the early Learning Goals.

The knowledge maps are working documents for 2020/21 and may be changed over the year if we see the need to make minor changes.
