Reception - Miss Egerton

Welcome to Reception Class

In their first year at Whirley the children are busy writing and drawing, listening, painting, counting, singing and dancing, reading and baking.

Throughout the day pupils have access to our wonderful outdoor area. We enjoy taking the children's learning outdoors where our activities include a digging area, play houses, bikes and cars, water area, weaving, gardening and much more. The children can access this area whatever the weather! We have waterproof clothes and a covered area.

In Reception our work is very much led by the children and what interests them. Our topics can change depending on the children's interests or a relevant event. These have included: starting school, pirates, Autumn, in the dark, Christmas, Winter, dinosaurs, fairy tales, people who help us, mini-beasts, growth and journeys. We provide children with a rich and varied curriculum. We also take part in Arts Week in February which is part of the Fallibroome Learning Community. This involves us having different artists and workshops coming into school to work with us.

The Early Years Foundation Stage

From September 2012 the Government has brought out a new statutory framework for the Early Years. This includes a new curriculum and new assessment procedure at the end of Reception Class. The curriculum aims to help children become equipped for life and ready for the rest of school; healthy, sociable, curious, happy, active and able to make the most of the opportunities available to them.

The new framework focuses on the importance of parental involvement and the partnership between schools.
