The Governing Body
What do we do?
What do we do?
Our main role is to support and, from a strategic perspective, challenge the Head Teacher and staff; the phrase often used to describe this role is a "critical friend". We work with teaching staff to set targets for learning and pupils' achievements, striving for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life. We monitor how well the school is doing in achieving its targets and where improvements can be made. As governors our duties include:
- Setting strategic direction, policies and objectives
- Approving the school budget and reviewing progress against it
- Monitoring and evaluating performance
- Ensuring that the school is accountable to the children, parents, staff, Local Authority and the community it serves
We do not get involved in the day-to-day workings of the school; this is clearly the responsibility of the Head Teacher and their management team.
Who are we?
Whirley Primary School's Governing Body has a diverse mix of experiences with members drawn from parents, staff and the local community. This puts us in a strong position to help the school achieve its aim of providing the best possible education for pupils. There are several categories of governor:
- Parent Governors, elected by parents
- Staff Governors, elected by the staff
- Co-Opted Governors, appointed by the Governing Body
We are united by our commitment to provide an excellent environment for all pupils to enjoy, be safe in and learn so they achieve as much as possible.
Our governors are all volunteers who give up their time to apply their skills and experience to help support our school. All governors are appointed for a term of four years, and we are part of the largest volunteer workforce in the UK with around 370,000 governor places nationally.
How can we be contacted?
