Would you like to become a Governor?
Whirley Community Primary School, part of multi academy The Fallibroome Trust, regularly looks to recruit governors to its governing body to support the continued success of the children.
What is the governing body and what do governors do?
The governing body are a group of individuals of all ages and from all walks of life and backgrounds who come together to work closely with the leaders of the schools to ensure that the children have access to the best possible school opportunities and preparation for the wider world.
Do I need to have experience?
No. If you have experience of being a governor, that’s great. However, no experience or particular expertise is called for, a desire to make a difference to children’s lives is sufficient. Training, often online, will be provided to help you understand the role and enable you to explore your area of interest, be it safeguarding, health and safety, finance or curriculum – to name but a few!
Is it time-consuming?
A face-to-face meeting takes place once for each of the three term and these can last between one and two hours. A further three optional committee meetings for Finance and Premises, Leadership and Management, and Teaching and Learning, take place virtually each term and these last one hour. All meetings take place after the working day. It is expected that governors join at least one committee.
In addition, you will be welcomed into school to meet children and staff and experience the environment and learning in action. Governors are encouraged to find an area of interest and meet with the person in school responsible.
Is it daunting and formal?
Not at all. Our governors are all friendly individuals who have a common purpose and the futures of the children and schools at heart. Mentoring and support are available.
Why become a governor?
It will give you the chance to make a real difference to young people, give something back to your local community and join the largest volunteer force in the country - there are over a quarter of a million governors from all backgrounds. In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to develop new skills in a safe environment and get to know a new group of people with a common focus.
I’m interested, what next?
Anyone over 18 is eligible, and if you feel this is for you, please don’t hesitate to contact a.ashcroft@whirley.org.uk to find out whether there are current vacancies on the Governing Body.
